The Florida Independent College Fund Awards UPS Scholarship
Published Nov. 14, 2012
Ismael Gomez Macias, a junior at Lynn University, was selected to receive a $2,400 UPS Scholarship provided through the Florida Independent College Fund. He is one of 29 students from Florida independent colleges to receive the award.
Gomez Macias, originally from Havana, Cuba, is the first in his family to attend college in the United States. In 2010, Gomez Marcias transferred to Lynn from the New York Film Academy. He is currently studying film in Lynn’s College of International Communication and aspires to be a movie director.
“Filmmaking is my passion,” said Gomez Macias who attributes his love of fine arts to his parents: Ismael Gomez (a painter) and Maria Del Carmen Marcias (a pharmacy clerk assistant who enjoys teaching literature and poetry writing). “This scholarship will help me pursue my dreams of being a director. With fewer financial obstacles, it encourages me to continue to do well academically and to focus on my life goals.”
Gomez Macias works part time in Lynn’s Student Administrative Services (SAS). “He is a positive role model in our office,” said Evelyn Nelson, executive director of SAS. In the future, Gomez Marcias hopes to help other young students achieve their goals by giving back to scholarship programs.
Florida Independent College Fund
The Florida Independent College Fund (FICF) is a statewide association for private colleges and universities that is affiliated with the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC). At the national level, CIC teams up with the UPS Foundation to distribute funding of the UPS Scholarship. This year, CIC awarded nearly $1.5 million in scholarships from its UPS Educational Endowment Fund to private institutions of higher learning across the nation, including a grant of $74,400 to FICF. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of the students’ academic achievement and financial need.
