Students pledge to go “One Day Without Shoes”
Published Mar. 29, 2011
Lynn students, staff and faculty will pledge to go shoe-free on Tuesday, April 5, as part of “One Day Without Shoes,” an international movement created by TOMS Shoes. According to the TOMS Shoes website, over 1,600 events were held and over 250,000 people went without shoes on “One Day Without Shoes” in 2010, and people from around the world participated.
Lynn’s “One Day Without Shoes” activities Include:
Lap without shoes and photo-op, 4 p.m.
At 4:15 p.m. students, staff and faculty will walk one lap around Lynn’s campus barefoot followed by a group photo-op in the Perper Plaza with everyone who went One Day Without Shoes at 4:25 p.m.
Celebration, 4:30 p.m.
At 4:30 p.m., everyone will gather in the Perper Plaza to celebrate the day with reflections, evaluations, food, music and a screening of the TOMS Shoes documentary.
“On April 5, my friends and I are going without shoes for One Day Without Shoes. It might be cold, it'll probably be uncomfortable, and our feet will certainly get dirty, but by doing so, we’ll help raise awareness of the impact a simple pair of shoes can bring to a child’s life,” wrote Lynn junior Zack Welsh in a letter to the community. “Some go without shoes for an hour, some for the whole day, but all become a part of a greater movement toward change. Please lead by example by going barefoot, and help mobilize Lynn University to be a part of One Day Without Shoes.”
Founder and chief shoe giver of TOMS Shoes, Blake Mycoskie, came to Lynn on April 19, 2010 as part of the Dialogues of Innovation Speaker Series. Mycoskie’s and TOMS Shoes’ motto is “One for One” – meaning for every one pair of TOMS Shoes purchased, one pair is given to a child in need. Shortly after his visit, Lynn students formed a TOMS Campus Club – to help raise awareness for the cause behind TOMS Shoes and to inspire young people (like Mycoskie was inspired) to implement an idea that will change the world.
On Sunday, March 10, Lynn was named TOMS Shoes Campus of the Week. “The Lynn University TOMS Campus Club started with a group of 5 friends interested in sharing the TOMS Story,” says the TOMSCampusClubs blog. “The Lynn club is extremely excited to be spreading the TOMS message and so happy to see TOMS shoes popping up on students' feet all over campus. Thank you for your incredible enthusiasm and commitment for the TOMS Movement and the impact a pair of shoes has on the life of a child.”
In addition to taking part in “One Day Without Shoes,” students in Lynn’s TOMS Campus Club have been working with Knights in the Community (Lynn’s community service club) and have been active on campus all year. They previewed the TOMS documentary in the fall, and on Wednesday, March 16, Lynn students, staff and faculty participated in the TOMS Shoes "Style Your Sole" Party-decorating the soles of their new white TOMS Shoes. More than 75 students purchased TOMS for the event.
