No more wandering – Students find librarians online

New chat reference service now available in Lynn Library

In addition to a recent physical makeover that made room for students, their changing study habits and the digital age, Lynn’s Library has enhanced its digital services and is now offering a chat reference service for students. Now, when students hit a wall while trolling Lynn’s databases or other Web resources, they don’t have to leave their workplace for assistance. They can contact the librarian via an Instant Messenger-like chat feature on

“By having the chat reference service readily available for our users, they have the ability to ask us questions while they are involved with their work and do not have to stop what they are doing to locate a librarian,” said Susan Montgomery, the library’s service desk manager. “The service went live on November 19. Students find it easy to use. We try to have coverage throughout the day and into the evening.”

Even if the librarian is away, students can leave a message with an e-mail address and the librarian will respond upon return. “Colleges from as big as FSU to small liberal arts colleges such as Rollins College are providing chat reference,” said Montgomery. “Part of our role as an academic library is to provide services to our users out where they need them. Most students are familiar with texting.  It is how college students, teachers and administrators communicate.”
