Last week, Lynn University students cast ballots and elected five new Student Government Association (SGA) officers for the 2009-10 academic year. Mohamed Abdalla, the group’s only returning official, was elected president after serving as chief financial officer this academic year. All five officers boast leadership experience – including three current freshman who were elected to the board. The officers are:

  • President – Mohamed Abdalla
  • Vice President – Jennifer Rodrigues
  • Knights Activities Team (KAT) Chair – Zachary Welsh
  • Residence Hall Association (RHA) Chair – Stephanie Hammerman
  • Chief Financial Officer  (CFO) – Armando Castillo

SGA President, Mohamed Abdalla, originally from North Providence, R.I., is a rising junior at Lynn. An aviation student in Lynn’s Burton D. Morgan School of Aeronautics, Abdalla aspires to become a professional pilot. His on-campus involvement includes serving as a residential assistant, member of Lynn’s aviation club and on Lynn’s Relay for Life committee. “I believe we can bring a lot to the students. That’s why we ran this hard campaign, because we really wanted to make a difference for the student body,” said Abdalla in a recent interview. “I believe the student body who elected us have a lot of confidence in us to deliver on that promise.  I’m just so happy right now. I can’t wait until the day I take office.” (See a recent post-election interview with Abdalla on Lynn’s Knight Writer blog.)

Abdalla’s running mate, Jennifer Rodrigues, a rising sophomore majoring in multimedia journalism, will take office as vice president of Lynn’s SGA this month. Rodrigues also hails from Providence, R.I. Although a current freshman, she has already held on-campus leadership roles including being a member of the Relay for Life committee, a member of KAT and she holds an executive board position for Knights in the Community.

Other first-year students elected to the board are KAT Chair Zachary Welsh (from Maryland) and RHA Chair Stephanie Hammerman (from Merrick, N.Y.). Welsh’s leadership roles include being a member of the Relay for Life committee, a member of KAT and he holds an executive board position for Knights in the Community. Hammerman was also active on campus this year as a member of the Residence Hall Association and Greek Council. Armando Castillo, SGA’s 2006-07 KAT Chair, graduated from Lynn in December 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Castillo will take office as SGA’s 2009-10 CFO while completing his M.B.A. in Lynn’s College of Business Management.

Lynn’s outgoing 2008-09 SGA president, Joey McNamara, noted in a recent blog post, “These individuals are going to be the student leaders who shape the future of SGA and how it is represented on campus. They will be the students that bring our community closer and continue to make strides to bridge any gaps between faculty, staff, and students.”
