Lynn’s Hayers, Porter Named Academic All-Americans
Published Nov. 19, 2008
With its season concluded, the postseason honors have begun to pour in for the Lynn University men’s soccer team. James Hayers and Lee Porter have been selected CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine First Team All-Americans as announced Wednesday. This marks the first time the Fighting Knights have had two First Team Academic All-Americans in the same season. Lynn has earned Academic or Scholar All-America honors in five consecutive years and 14 of the last 17 years.
Hayers becomes the first men’s soccer player to garner consecutive CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American accolades in program history and the sixth to earn multiple scholar All-America awards. He was a first team honoree in 2007.
This year, the Cardiff, Wales, native established himself as one of the premier left backs in the nation. He set career-highs with seven assists and nine points, played all but 60 minutes on the field and was part of a defense that held opponents to just three shots on goal and less than a goal scored per game. Hayers has already been honored as a First Team All-Sunshine State Conference and First Team Daktronics All-South Region selection.
One of the most decorated men’s soccer players at Lynn, Porter adds to a bevy of honors which includes 17 all-conference, all-region, scholar All-American and All-American selections. The senior defender tied a career-high with 11 goals while also notching five assists for 27 points. In addition, he played all but five minutes, anchoring a Knights defense which surrendered just 18 goals in 20 games (0.89 goals-against average). For his career, he tallied 33 goals and 20 assists for 86 points with 14 game-winning goals, second most in Lynn’s history.
The Fighting Knights closed out the season 18-2 overall, claiming the SSC regular season and tournament titles.
