Lynn University to break ground on Snyder Sanctuary
Published Mar. 05, 2014
Later this month, Lynn University will break ground on the Snyder Sanctuary, a multi-faith facility for contemplative thought and spiritual exploration. The building was made possible by a generous gift from Jamie S. and Stephen F. Snyder, vice chairman of Lynn University’s Board of Trustees. It was designed by Newman Architects, who also designed the Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center and the Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn Library on Lynn’s campus.
"We are so excited about the Snyder Sanctuary," said Senior Vice President for Development and Administration Gregory Malfitano. "Thanks to the generosity of the Snyder family, this has come to fruition. The sanctuary will be a great place for students to think, mediate and contemplate their life, it will be a place of solitude. As far as its design, it's a work of art by architect Herb Newman and we are very excited."
The Snyder sanctuary uses various elements to reflect spiritual concepts found across the world.
- The sanctuary has seven walls that lean on each other. The walls create a spiral form that are interdependent, yet support each other. The design is meant to show the interdependence of all living things.
- The sanctuary has frosted glass windows that will let in natural light. The frosted glass will also create a sense of separation from the outside world since it will obscure the happenings outside of the sanctuary.
- A labyrinth will be outside of the main building.
- A lobby, lounge and classroom wing will support the sanctuary wing.
