Lynn University hosting watch parties for presidential and vice presidential debates
Published Oct. 02, 2012
As Lynn University prepares to host the third and final presidential debate on Oct. 22, the university is engaging students in the political process by hosting watch parties for the presidential debates (Wednesday, Oct. 3 and Tuesday, Oct. 16) and vice presidential debate (Thursday, Oct. 11) at the other host universities.
“The presidential debates are a great example of democracy and something that the College Republicans are excited about being a part of,” said Mark Spiro, president of the College Republicans at Lynn. “We will be scoring the candidates throughout the debate, and then we will be sharing pizza with our friends in the College Democrats after.”
“It is important that people understand what each candidate stands for and how they plan on moving the nation forward, and frankly, debates are a good way to assess that,” said JJ Dawson, president of the College Democrats.
Students at Lynn, like their peers at the other institutions hosting presidential debates this year, will have a front-row seat to history.
“We are trying to foster a dialogue among students on both the role of the presidential debates in this campaign and the content discussed during them,” said Robert Watson, professor of American Studies in Lynn's College of Liberal Education. “Hosting a presidential debate provides us with an unparalleled opportunity to engage our students in the political process and, happily, so many of them have caught the debate bug!”
There will be a straw poll and students will fill out “debate scorecards” to determine who won each debate. Students in Watson’s classes will compare results during class the next day. The candidates will be given points based on appeal to swing voters, zingers, leadership and other categories.
AARP is sponsoring the watch party and reception for the University of Denver debate on Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Amarnick-Goldstein Concert Hall (inside the de Hoernle International Center) at Lynn.
These watch parties are open to the Lynn community:
- Thursday, Oct. 11 at 9 p.m.: Centre College Vice Presidential Debate Watch Party will be held in the Knights’ Court, a hub of student activity on the second floor of Lynn's Student Center.
- Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 9 p.m.: Hofstra University Presidential Debate Watch Party will be held in the Knights’ Court, a hub of student activity on the second floor of Lynn's Student Center.
These watch parties will bring the Lynn community together to hear the candidates’ stances on policies and to discuss pressing issues. In addition, the results of the debates will help voters make informed and educated decisions at the polls this election season.
