Lynn senior's dedication to community service earns him a scholarship to study abroad
Published Sep. 20, 2011
Based on his devotion to social justice, Zachary Welsh, a 21-year-old Lynn University senior majoring in photography with a minor in advertising, earned the Marie McKay Global Citizen Scholarship from Athena Study Abroad to study in Paros, Greece. To receive the scholarship Welsh demonstrated:
- an initiative to give back to society
- an awareness of global community
- an intent to apply the skills and lessons learned abroad to his future endeavors
“I have a lot of experience with community service,” said Welsh. At Lynn, Welsh was actively involved with the university’s community service organization, Knights in the Community. Last year, he spearheaded Lynn’s first annual One Day Without Shoes, an international movement created by TOMS Shoes to help raise awareness of the importance of shoes for impoverished children.
"At Lynn, we focus on engaging students in the knowledge and skills to prepare them to be active and responsible citizens in today’s global society," said Anna Krift, director of Lynn's Center for Global Education and Citizenship. "Inspiring our students to follow their passion and participate in experiential and service learning, locally and abroad, and to further their global awareness is what we seek to instill. Zachary has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to community service which Athena Study Abroad recognized. We were thrilled to learn about his achievement."
Although his dedication to helping others was strengthened at Lynn, Welsh has been involved with community service since childhood. “As a kid, I participated in service projects with the Boy Scouts of America,” said Welsh, “and in high school I did a lot of work to help the victims of Darfur.”
Studying in Paros, Greece
On Sept. 8, Welsh left his hometown of Westminster, Md., and traveled to Paros, a popular tourist destination in the Greek Islands. He will spend the final semester of his senior year studying at the Hellenic International Studies in the Arts. While abroad, Welsh has a full course load:

“Studying on Paros Island just seemed like such an amazing place and experience,” said Welsh, who will be in Greece through December. “I love history so I’m excited to learn the ancient culture and history of Greece and surrounding countries.”
Before leaving, Welsh outlined his Top-10 list. “I want to see and do as much as possible,” he said
Welsh’s Top-10 (in no particular order) are:
- eat as much authentic food as possible

Welsh’s projected graduation date from Lynn’s College of International Communication is December 2011, but he plans to return to campus in May 2012 to walk at graduation. Following graduation, Welsh will pursue a profession in travel photography. He is exploring opportunities abroad and in the states.
