Lynn announces proposed 2010 January Term courses

Lynn University students will be spending their next two-and-a-half week January Term in much the same way as they spent their first – learning in some unconventional, exciting and often experiential ways. For the second consecutive year, Lynn’s Office of Academic Affairs has unveiled more than 70 courses proposed for the 2010 January mini-term (J-Term), called The Dialogues of Innovation.
The 2010 roster, which includes several highly popular encores from the 2009 inaugural term, is also filled with new on-campus, domestic and international opportunities in all areas of study, including:
- A public service and documentary class “Underwater Pickup Lines – Diving with Trash,” where students will participate in open-water cleanups from West Palm Beach to Looe Key while capturing underwater video footage for public service announcement video releases that will appear on the Web sites of the Boca Raton News and WPTV Channel 5
- Three volunteer service trips, “Journey of Hope” to Jamaica, Nicaragua or Haiti where students (along with the nationally recognized organization, Food for the Poor) will build homes for the poor in underdeveloped countries
- A communication course, “Japan – Multimedia Technology and Game Design,” where students will travel to Japan to explore multimedia trends associated with game design, computer animation, visual communication and its impact to a global communication system
- An on-campus business class, “How to Start (or Buy) a Business on a Shoestring Budget,” where students will learn how to begin the entrepreneurial process with only an abundance of enthusiasm
- An education course, “What Is It Really Like to be a Teacher?,” where students will shadow teachers at local schools to learn about planning, instructing, lunch, bus duty, dismissal and after-school meetings
Last January, Lynn students made headlines by living history in Washington, D.C. at the Inauguration of America’s first black president; performing live on Broadway in Times Square; working behind the scenes at the 2009 ESPN Winter X Games in Colorado; and learning valuable life lessons though the eyes of the New York Yankees. With the exception of the inauguration trip, all of these options are being repeated in the next term.
“Lynn University students participating in the inaugural January Term 2009 had the opportunity to engage in educationally purposeful experiences while pursuing their passions,” said Dr. Katrina Carter-Tellison, Chair of The Dialogues of Learning. “Students are now following paths through their involvement with local and global causes and organizations, pursuing summer positions and, most importantly, being responsible citizens,” said Dr. Anna Krift, Co-Chair of The Dialogues of Innovation.
The J-Term, part of Lynn’s innovative core curriculum, The Dialogues of Learning, provides students with educational experiences focusing on original ideas, topics, pedagogies and/or experiential learning. All undergraduate students are required to participate in J-Term. All of the term’s courses offer 1.5 academic credits and are heavy on hands-on learning opportunities.
