Lacey discusses his book on Saudi Arabia and the emergence of extreme Islam in the Middle East
Published Nov. 11, 2009
International bestselling author Robert Lacey was on-campus last week discussing Inside the Kingdom, his new book detailing Saudi Arabia’s ongoing struggle between 21st century modernity and ancient traditions, extremist elements and Western interests.
Watch the full video of Lacey’s lecture and follow along with his slides.
Lacey, who has discussed his new book in recent days on Good Morning America, CNN’s Larry King Live, and MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”, said, “one of the paradoxes I discuss in my book is the way a money boom, an oil boom, a wealth boom, produced not more modernization but in fact a religion boom,” at last week’s event. “It was the beginning of the emergence of extreme Islam in the Middle East.” Lacey also revealed the Saudis’ role in and reaction to the Sept. 11 attacks (and the “War on Terror” it inspired).
Lacey’s appearance was sponsored by Lynn and the Boca Raton Historical Society. A complimentary reception with the author, sponsored by the new Seagate Hotel and Spa in Delray Beach, followed the lecture.
