Published Feb. 26, 2009
An undergraduate course in Lynn’s College of International Communication this semester called “Issues in Communication: Contemporary Debates in Media Politics” is putting students in direct contact with political movers and shakers, the reporters who cover them, and others. Every Tuesday and Thursday, the class interviews experts on media and/or politics – all of which are streamed and made available online.
So far this semester, the class, run by American Studies professor Robert Watson, has featured guests including Ken Hechler, 9-term member of Congress former aide to President’s Roosevelt and Truman; Manny Munoz, producer for WIOD News Radio; Governor Michael Dukakis, former Massachusetts governor and 1988 Democratic nominee for president; Kim Miller, reporter for the Palm Beach Post; and Senator Ted Deutch accompanied by chief aide, Tara Laxer.
Upcoming lecturers include NBC reporter, Paige Kornblue; political director of the Palm Beach County Republican Party, Mark Hoch; and even a possible appearance by Congressman Wexler and Boca Raton mayor, Susan Welchel. Watson’s class also has students getting a first-hand look in to the local newsrooms taking tours and doing interviews at the Sun-Sentinel and WPTV (NBC affiliate) next month.
Additional lecturers and tours will be scheduled. For the most up to date information and to hear previously recorded podcasts from Watson’s class, visit www.lynnuniversity.net/mediapolitics.
